My work takes me further down south more often than most places. The dynamics in Davao City is such that business have been sprouting up and a lot of economic and touristy stuff are happening all at the same time. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I tell you, for those who have not been here, YOU have to come! Because a they say, "Life is here ...". Locals jokingly say as well that for criminals, "Life ends here..."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But tagline aside, Davao City truly is a MUST visit local place. And for people visiting the city, you will be amazed at how polite and honest the taxi or cab drivers are in the city. When you land at the Francisco Bangoy International Airport, and take a taxi, there is a mandatory lane that you have to pass as you exit. An officer will get your name. <i>Please give your real name</i>. It's not a hoax, the reason for this is to track passengers and taxi's. I've heard that driver's return items left in their taxis at the airport and you can ask the airport to track the taxi you rode in if you left items inside. Nice!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Davao City taxi driver's are also easy to talk to. They usually talk about Davao with pride. Yes, this is despite the 30, 40 and 60kph speed limit rules in their city. And mind you, this is heavily enforced! Yes friends, pls plan your time when you travel in the city. Driver's DO follow the rules.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And when you're inside their cab, their ID's are highly visible. Unlike those OMG taxis in Manila where the drivers look shady! And when you're near your destination, most would ask if you want a receipt. "O di ba?" </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yep, indeed, when I ride any taxi in Davao, I feel secure and safe. Just bring your waze or use google maps to check where you are as you take the taxi ride so you can view the city map as well. Davao City taxi's are also known for giving you your exact change. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And today, when I rode the taxi to airport, saw a new sign that caught my attention. It's a 20% senior citizen and PWD discount given to passengers. I asked the driver if they really give it. He said yes, and sometimes the driver narrates, the passenger is the one who say, <i>"imo na lang ang discount"</i>, and don't avail. Wow! And so I asked again if they ask for ID like most establishments who give these discounts, he said, <i>"di na maam, kita ra man</i>". You see, they don't even ask for ID, they just visually check you!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sign inside taxi giving senior citizen and PWD discount</td></tr>

Now this is what you call real taxi service! So I alighted my cab and handed him P140, the meter said P142. So I hurriedly opened my wallet to get more cash, but the driver said, <i>"ok ra na ma'am"</i>. I thanked him and got off. <b>Boy, if this was in Manila ... I could just imagine!!!</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am again a happy and satisfied, taxi passenger in Davao City! I wish the local governments of our cities get to transform our cab drivers to be like the Davao City taxi drivers, courteous, honest and law abiding, then riding these PUVs wouldn't be a struggle all the time! You know what I mean!</div>

We're back to regular programming and this weekend, it's just dad and me. So after hearing mass, we needed to do some grocery shopping as we're at all time low on supplies at home. It 11:30am and we're thinking where do we have lunch? Options meant eating at the local restos or national chains ... </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So Dad and I decided to eat at the SRP. That's our way home. S-R-P. It's the South Road Project that created the south reclamation area. With the SRP, out travel has been cut considerably vs taking the regular national highway. We used to travel 45-60min from our house to the Cebu City but with the SRP, you can be in Cebu City in 20-25min!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And eating at SRP mean, eating at the road-side "carenderias" that serve "larang, tinola, kanding caldereta, paklay" and other local dishes. Yep, the SRP is lined with these local restaurants as you go north or south-bound. </div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm1BzyiuVYkj8O0Z60yCJaZOkmAx_Jde6B1tnkQollVMe5UU9-OEA1DkH4U77Vzb7VsEQ1iVavoUV13gfzCD_r7_PdhZDJNt0txTgHiwsZHkUan0MpIw3eTi4CDXLiLaSAoj0B2lMDW6g/s1600/Carens3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm1BzyiuVYkj8O0Z60yCJaZOkmAx_Jde6B1tnkQollVMe5UU9-OEA1DkH4U77Vzb7VsEQ1iVavoUV13gfzCD_r7_PdhZDJNt0txTgHiwsZHkUan0MpIw3eTi4CDXLiLaSAoj0B2lMDW6g/s1600/Carens3.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This eatery is on the south-bound side of the SRP</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So we decided to eat at Nancy's as its the most accessible and we saw steam coming out from cooking pots - which means hot soup in progress! The server hurriedly asked us what we wanted, "tinola or larang". Dad had "larang" but I can't handle the spicy hot soup so I asked for "tinola" instead. These dishes are fish-based. And because we were doing fish, we might as well do squid or "nokus". So this smiling <i>serbedora, </i>prepares our plates, spoon and fork, and asked us, "mais mo sir?" But of course, it's such a treat for us! Eating corn grain as rice is popular in Cebu. I grew up eating this specially when we go vacay in Alcantara (my mom's hometown, down south). </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The hot and spicy "larang" soup!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We had our drinks those cute solo bottles of 7-Up. Hmmm, no Coke, just Pepsi products. I couldn't finish the corn-rice, just ate half of it. Corn isn't like regular "palay" rice, it's heavier and one usually get's stuffed faster.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dad finished his meal, and looked for the "serbedora" and asked her to compute our meal. So guess how much??? Hahaha, only P175.00 for the two of us! That's 3 dishes, with corn-rice and 2 drinks! Food court lang ang peg!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So we drove away, got home in 10min. Happy to be eating out, along the road (al fresco), and happy not to wash any dishes!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So when you're in Cebu, you may want to check out the SRP's roadside eateries for some local fares!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Happy weekend!</div>

With a toddler at home, I am exposed to their excess energy brought about (probably) by their milk and vitamins or just plain toddler power. I am now trying to plan outings and play-dates that will allow the toddler to play, learn and socialize. Initially, I've scouted the "pay playrooms" in both Ayala Center Cebu and SM City Cebu. I even scouted SM City Iloilo a month ago when I had to take the toddler out of the house just so he gets to run around and play. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Unfortunately there are only a few and the space gets really cramped on weekends ... yes, just about the only time adults have time to take their kids out. My cousin tells me there is a bigger one at Parkmall in Mandaue, I could check it out. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But my idea of play is more outdoor. My thinking is that, kids nowadays are cooped up at home with their digital devices and TV shows, that I'd want kids to enjoy a bit of sun, grass and some fresh air. And yes, perspire a bit outside air-conditioned rooms. The more I think about it, the more I envy the First World Countries with all their parks and playgrounds.</div>

In my recent trip to London, I was in awe by the government's plan to ensure each village or town really have huge parks where people can stroll around, have picnics, exercise, read under the trees, look at the greenery and just enjoy nature. It was the start of summer and we could see kids playing and adults enjoying a great time outdoors. Yep, they just pack sandwiches and a picnic blanket and they have an instant outing!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course, I know with our weather (the heat can be unbearable at times) and the fact that Cebu isn't really as lush as we want it to be, having those green parks maybe hard to create. But we have the sea and reclamation areas that can be partially developed to become seaside parks with activity areas for the young and old alike. We can have those wonderful bay-walks or piers like in Sydney and Melbourne. Truly a lot could still be developed here in Cebu!<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But for now, I'm thankful for an upcoming bday party to help add to the fun, play and socialization of this toddler. I'm thinking of bringing the toddler to Plaza Independencia and the Fort San Pedro for some running space and a look into Cebu's history. He is just 20 months old BTW!</div>

Remember when you a kid and a simple corrugated box could already transport you to playing house or playing detective? My memories of play was always more fun with my cousins around. I think it's during summertime when the cousins are deposited in our place before and we would spend hours playing and resisting the mandatory afternoon nap. We would swap stationery, play lego, play house (luto2x sa kun), run-around, eat, talk, make up stories, read our comics from the local <i>Funny Comics</i> (remember Bardagol and Planet of the Apes?) to the american titles like Tom & Jerry, The Road Runner ... ah those afternoons spent writing new words because Mommy Junie will pay us 5centavos for each new word learned!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Those summertime meet ups didn't seem very expensive. We just needed to always have snacks (food) and a space to play around ... space could be anything, not a fancy park or mall. It was the company that matters! Ah, I wish I had a digital camera then so I could have captured those moments ... but I'm sure a lot of us have these memories at heart!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And so today, I came upon an old pic that showed not the whole Cousins Inc but a good number of us. I remembered this was taken the time before our Bandillo cousins were leaving for Germany together with Uncle Butch. I was probably a senior in UP Dill and we went to <i>Nayong Filipino</i>, a first for me and probably for the most of us. </div>

So I really want to maximize this cousin bonding magic and let our little ward experience what it's all about. In this modern age, we do a lot of digital stuff (like this blog writing) and sometimes forget that a good 2-3 hrs of cousin bonding time can indeed be just pure happiness and simple joy! When we were growing up, I would remember several instances where we will be left under the care of our Aunt for several days while our parents would travel for holiday. When they got back I vividly remember once having a battery operated helicopter toy as gift from their Manila travel. Traveling in the 80's with children might have been such a nightmare for parents here in the Philippines. With air travel so limited, most would probably take the ships to travel to and from the different islands of our country. Besides, this was the 80's when disposable diapers where not the usual fare for mothers. It must have been really hard even if you had a yaya or nanny in tow.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last year, I needed to travel with a one-yr old. I've done all the preps. His baby bag becomes my fashionable handbag and I opted to carry him (as he still couldn't walk) rather than bringing a body carrier or a stroller (he had one in our destination). I also prepared milk so that when we fly he sucks the bottle and wouldn't experience air pressure inside his tiny ears. Besides, this was a 30-minute flight, how bad could it be?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My first hurdle was checking in, thank heavens I had a four-wheel luggage bag that made it easy for me to push and endorse to the airline counter. So now I have baby bag and the toddler. Whew! Next hurdle was the final check-in, a bit easy since I only have the baby bag.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But when I got it, I remembered seeing a sign before in my previous trips that said Airport Playroom. So I asked one of the airport personnel if there was a playroom in the Iloilo Airport. And yes, there was! In fact, I was pleasantly surprise because the Iloilo Toddlers Area was very spacious and clean. The personnel in-charge was very accommodating and even told me that they have a breast-feeding room and changing table ready for use. I think most local airports have this already. I saw one in Davao but it wasn't as spacious as the one in Iloilo.</div>

Budget Hotels - GO Hotel Otis<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I was assigned to Visayas and Mindanao, I had the customary meetings in Manila for HO (head office) updates and alignments. I would usually stay at our condo in Mandaluyong. My former boss, a fellow <i>Bisdak </i>(someone who hails from VisMin and speaks Bisaya) is always so kind to pass by me, as we live within the same area, and give me a ride to the Head Office. My other option was to borrow a "spare car" from the office so I can drive myself to and from my condo. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last year, Manila started having all these road rehab and construction projects. Driving within the Metro meant extra minutes of travel. I was horrified one-time of driving from Bel Air Makati to Greenhills Shopping Center for 1.5hrs on a Sunday when EDSA was being rehabilitated. This wouldn't take more than 30mins on a normal Sunday at 1030am!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I re-assessed my accommodations when I visit Manila for work. I was told of the new <i>Go Hotel</i> at Otis which is just across the office. And so I did. Now, I've never been to a <i>Go Hotel</i> before but this hotel is very near our Head Office, a good 5-10min walk. It's marketed as a budget/value hotel. It doesn't serve breakfast, it has no restaurants (but it's within the Robinsons Otis Mall that has restos), no pool, no spa, no gym, no in-house massage, no meeting rooms or business center, no free water or coffee/tea and it's a bring-your-own personal amenities kit otherwise pay P99 for a kit. They do provide the usual towels, bathmat, handsoap and shampoo, and free wifi. There is a vendo that sells water, assorted drinks, chips, and hot drinks like coffee and chocolate to satisfy your food cravings or you can always go down and shop at the Robinsons supermarket.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9mFWcgi4-Z6zjogMngOeP-1vbBAQAngE5KzT7TDVO456i56-5g-T49cfiRjjfE3n6sGVJ4dRV2i2Wc6c8twr5lOe4aHyxeUPDTR2g9TDWgrObbAEQdHC1WX2eGYijRVFz8BOVxICAo10/s1600/hotel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9mFWcgi4-Z6zjogMngOeP-1vbBAQAngE5KzT7TDVO456i56-5g-T49cfiRjjfE3n6sGVJ4dRV2i2Wc6c8twr5lOe4aHyxeUPDTR2g9TDWgrObbAEQdHC1WX2eGYijRVFz8BOVxICAo10/s1600/hotel.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>This is their single bed room. Rooms on maximum can really just accommodate </i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>2 adults and max of 2 kids under 6 years old.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Room rates so far averages at Php1,300/night whether single or two beds. Well, if you check their website, they have offers lower than this. For a Manila hotel with the amenities available, this is value already for me. And this place is still new, so it doesn't have that old building smell. Their rooms do not have carpets though and so do the halls ... this means sound absorption may be a problem and you can hear echos if people talk too loud in the halls.<br />
<br />
There is no breakfast place or resto, and you're not supposed to eat inside your room. So, <i>Go Hotel</i> provides you with an outside eating area that can double up as a lounging area as well. We had a typhoon today, and decided to order delivery and we just ate our dinner at the hall below. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVU9gR3bGAr4I6rW_X60YLrY8gfMF1-uWBWLoSGS5GTxg-TquE8V4B67oNV0DkeO6BmmiOLiHHBo6A34gvyEA1gcrEVAr2Qy8U45LKCQqzUinhbugidGTv15DgFTZw2N0z3h4M1PE8RwE/s1600/hotel2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVU9gR3bGAr4I6rW_X60YLrY8gfMF1-uWBWLoSGS5GTxg-TquE8V4B67oNV0DkeO6BmmiOLiHHBo6A34gvyEA1gcrEVAr2Qy8U45LKCQqzUinhbugidGTv15DgFTZw2N0z3h4M1PE8RwE/s1600/hotel2.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>This is a view of their hall. Notice the yellow table where my work notebook is? </i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Newspapers are also provided for.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've also noticed that most of the people who book rooms here are either students reviewing for some exam, families (probably vacationing in Manila) and some foreigners. They look decent, not at all weirdos, so far! And today, I think it has people checking in because some areas of Manila have no electricity and water. A value for money hotel that can solve these temporary concerns caused by a typhoon.<br />
<br />
So, I've stayed here in most of my stays in Manila. It allows me to be close to the office, not be stuck in traffic or drive for hours ... it's almost like a dorm within our office! So I say, it's a practical choice when in the Manila area. You may want to try it!<br />

My husband and I traveled to Europe few weeks back. Main reason for our trip was to attend my cousin's wedding who's based on Rotterdam or R'Dam. We arrived in R'Dam via the Eurostar and Thalys from London. We were so lucky as the hotel we were booked in was very close to the city center and Koopgoot.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So as we were walking around, we noticed that the stores were decorated in <i><b>orange</b></i>. There were a lot of <i><b>orange</b></i> stuff across the different stores so we never really connected it to ... FIFA and the WORLD CUP!!! There was so much merchandise about it. There was even an <i>orange lion dancing</i> outside the door of the McDonald's across the Hema store. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So one night, we had dinner with the cousins and my uncle and we went to this Dudok place. There was absolutely almost no one in the resto, the streets were sooooo silent and because it was cold, we thought, well maybe people are inside their homes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>NO! Everyone were in the pubs watching the game between Netherlands and Australia! </b>When we arrived at our hotel, the lobby looked like a war zone because people spilled from the bar to the reception area. YUP! The World Cup is soooo huge <i>diay</i> in Europe! I completely forgot! And what we didn't know was that the <i>Oranje Team</i> -- Netherland's team is a strong contender for the finals!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even in our room, we could hear the roar of the people watching in the hotel lobby and the people in their homes when the Oranje team made a goal (we opened our windows to have some fresh air in, no aircon needed). WOW! <i>Murag Pacquiao Fight lang ang peg!</i> I would want to watch it but my hotel cable has no coverage!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So I will just have to wait it out! I'm sure Jamie, Chi-wai and Tita Esther are waiting for the game to start!</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Remember in nursery or kindergarten you had this song, <i>"beep-beep the small jeep is coming down the street, stop, look and listen 2x, beep-beep the small jeep is coming down the street"</i>? I remembered this toy that our teacher uses to explain the meaning of the traffic lights. You could dismantle it, then close the different lights to show the color ... can you remember this toy? Probably my classmates in San Carlos would.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well I checked the internet and all I could find was this pic, it's the closest to that toy in kindergarten.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPFsFieWAbI3c6Q2wyM4rH8u2zkQ7Z7niE8DHmo0-o66XaT7onWoaNhPyJ_RHAkAiKgbZq_A-AtCj7SUIr4zpeCkTAH0gAAcwX_UIQOZqVnXCZDNgHl4dFZDErzyzJzkAOMiOtSq3LZxc/s1600/traffic+light.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPFsFieWAbI3c6Q2wyM4rH8u2zkQ7Z7niE8DHmo0-o66XaT7onWoaNhPyJ_RHAkAiKgbZq_A-AtCj7SUIr4zpeCkTAH0gAAcwX_UIQOZqVnXCZDNgHl4dFZDErzyzJzkAOMiOtSq3LZxc/s1600/traffic+light.jpg" height="320" width="277" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am no wondering if the schools have stopped (private and public) teaching this in school. I drive around today with my recovering ankle and I get these crazy pedestrians crossing when the light is soooo GREEN! My dad said I should excuse these people <i>"kay basi wala sila kita ug traffic light sa ila bukid"</i>. WAHAT? No dad, I only saw "palay" in books and saw real "palay" when I was in college during a field trip ... so really in this day and age, "wa pa kakita ug traffic light"? </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Do people know what the lights mean? Honestly, this is very basic. Schools should teach children road signs and safety as part of, I don't know Social Studies or Homeroom Sessions or Social Graces (mommy friends, do kids still have this?). </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Or you know like, when walking one should be able to identify the safe side. Do you know where it is? <i>Hala, patay basi absent mo sa class when this was discussed.</i> You should be able to see the incoming traffic and that is the side you should be walking. When I drive and I see a grown-up letting a child walk along the danger side ... my gosh, <i>ganahan gyud ko manaog ug kasab-an ang adult </i>and teach them that children should be walking in the inner side of the road or sidewalk (if there is any). And this goes for motorcycles too!!!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Really, people take road safety for granted! They expect other people to do that for them! I really think schools can help educate our children and parents alike on this one. It's a simple song that can save lives!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

The Reason Why I Go to Certain Churches<span style="font-family: inherit;">Sundays always start slow but it's never complete without hearing mass and going to church. It has become a habit for me and my family for years. I'm not religious, but I would like to believe i have healthy relationship with God and I'm comfortable with my faith. I thank my parents for this!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">When I was studying in UP Diliman and away from home at 16, me and my friends would walk from Kalayaan during freshmen year or from Molave to the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice. It's an open type of chapel, it's round or circular and the altar is at the center. We spent Sundays praying for good grades or passing grades, for friendship, for protection, for love ... a college student's usual wish. Those cool <i>simbang gabi</i> masses we used to go, wishing for Christmas to come because it means going home once again!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here is a pic of the church which I just got from the internet. I can't seem to find my own photos.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju4zo9qAQH3ZxFr4_TTGMVWdRlB4pzGFaH5r5H2_kmNMMm0ST_xz7H6S1ytes2VbDsIA9xw-8f4NYz_DEhFv9k_H8NubYrX7iT2cX5jJdNMl4lOwlr9kDTr-eHEXo_4NDRR59PejfzdiA/s1600/church2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju4zo9qAQH3ZxFr4_TTGMVWdRlB4pzGFaH5r5H2_kmNMMm0ST_xz7H6S1ytes2VbDsIA9xw-8f4NYz_DEhFv9k_H8NubYrX7iT2cX5jJdNMl4lOwlr9kDTr-eHEXo_4NDRR59PejfzdiA/s1600/church2.jpg" height="215" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After college, I went home and worked in Cebu for 2yrs but had to leave home once again and look for work in Manila. I got to work in an MNC, Unilever Phils., and was initially based in Makati near Bel-Air. Reposo St., now renamed as Nicanor Garcia St., is one of the most beautiful streets in Makati for me. It's a long 2-way street with trees lining the whole stretch and lots of local restos, places of interest.<br />
<br />
What's great about Reposo is that, the St Andrew The Apostle Church is in the middle of it and lucky me, this church is just a walk away from my place in Makati (good 5-10min walk). I love this church, more the people and the parish priests that run the church. It's very orderly, the choir has very good choice of songs -- I only sing during Holy Mass, families come to pray and celebrate, it always felt good clapping my hands after every Sunday mass. The parish had a lot of activities for the community, relevant ones like values education for household help, there were always announcement of LSS activities ... it makes you feel you belong to this community!<br />
<br />
But what I cannot forget were the roses given to Mothers on Mother's Day, how the priest would sing a song for them, the special blessings given to married couples on Valentine's Day, those special ceremonies that made the church reach out to the mass-goers --- this was a community, a parish indeed. The church is semi-circle in shape, now it's fully air-conditioned but before when I started going there in 1998 it was just the electric fans ...<br />
<br />
Here is an outside pic of the St Andrew, again I got this from the internet images. Despite the 5-6yrs we stayed in Makati we never got to take a pic of this church.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_59SW8JzD6RPrDVpX6xLDXbdTT3IrtKvrqt_Eor5VUuIiYLSxlMCJRY3BEGcBRSGTjrVvrEkK62CCl7bq1_q51tJzIOX8XZsS5fayKTZRovaORBqoEXMci7hjcMOpbmit2OqEtchIc5o/s1600/church1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_59SW8JzD6RPrDVpX6xLDXbdTT3IrtKvrqt_Eor5VUuIiYLSxlMCJRY3BEGcBRSGTjrVvrEkK62CCl7bq1_q51tJzIOX8XZsS5fayKTZRovaORBqoEXMci7hjcMOpbmit2OqEtchIc5o/s1600/church1.jpg" height="243" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When we transferred to Mandaluyong, we still continued to go to St Andrew. It always felt like home for Bri and Me. On a Sunday this church would be a good 15min drive.<br />
<br />
When mom got sick and there were days it became unbearable and I just needed to pray and talk to God, to ask for strength, for healing ... I would drive to St Andrew but then it closes at 9pm and from the office in Manila, would only give me 30min inside the church. I would like a candle and pray outside. This church has been part of my life, when in Manila I would always try to find time to go to mass here.<br />
<br />
As the years passed, and I spent my alone years in Manila with Bri starting his practice in Cebu. Driving to Makati became hard for me, hard because I had to do all the chores at the condo. I needed to save time. So I started going to the Edsa Shrine, yes, people would probably say, that's a mall-church. I was skeptical, St Andrew was hard to beat. This church is a good 10min away, shorter than Makati.<br />
<br />
But surprisingly, the Edsa Shrine is a parish of it's own. Yes, I may not see the routine families who go to the 10am mass in St Andrew every Sunday but the sense of community was very much alive. The choir's choice of popular songs made it easy for me to transition to the new parish! The people who go (at least to the 930am mass), seem to be really praying, praising and celebrating the mass. This was important for me. I do not like going to church with seatmates just discussing their daily lives!<br />
<br />
On days, I felt lonely, all alone in the big city, I would drive there, pray, attend mass. Just sit and pray! The church is actually so comforting despite the big mall beside it.<br />
<br />
An inside pic of the Edsa Shrine altar, the cross is greenish glass. I got this from the internet again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGmBy5zarlzQLveSed-8zwRNU9uvc-DmpipOQGfcyN6uKK2k8XETXi5C6Zntxf0KAMz_HA-NvXxlyWF3vDYvqFlxaaI_ZUOL5LKGaYejshdf9pCT1s5Jou2tF0m-01xNt-IcUmF7tJiG8/s1600/church4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGmBy5zarlzQLveSed-8zwRNU9uvc-DmpipOQGfcyN6uKK2k8XETXi5C6Zntxf0KAMz_HA-NvXxlyWF3vDYvqFlxaaI_ZUOL5LKGaYejshdf9pCT1s5Jou2tF0m-01xNt-IcUmF7tJiG8/s1600/church4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Now back in Cebu, and when we're here, we would go to San Nicolas parish near the Pasil & Taboan (fish market). Mom served this church as a member of YLAC (Young Ladies Association for Charity). She would don her gray uniform every Sunday for the 9am mass and take care of collection. It came natural for me to go there when I got back home.<br />
<br />
It's a big church, very airy, it's old and it participates in the "sugat fluvial parade" during the Feast of the Sto. Nino every January. I love this church as well, because it's not pretentious, people go there to pray, to give thanks to celebrate! It is a community, and I love going there because of this. Same as St Andrew, there are the "regulars" who you may not know their names but know their faces as you go bow down, smile and say, "peace be with you".<br />
<br />
Here is a pic of the inside of San Nicolas, grabbed from the internet. I can't seem to find the pic I posted in FB.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGvIblFi5pq4N5ypRy1g0qffEPyRuTkuM9IUAcvRdmrUbTlVGc4Kwvk-2O5JFoFN0eDda5auA5BkqBrCqYVm6OGAmw5Osi7lu_frAc6YB-BJlUynapCOVezlsunZWvcMp7ajmsGMjl4lQ/s1600/church5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGvIblFi5pq4N5ypRy1g0qffEPyRuTkuM9IUAcvRdmrUbTlVGc4Kwvk-2O5JFoFN0eDda5auA5BkqBrCqYVm6OGAmw5Osi7lu_frAc6YB-BJlUynapCOVezlsunZWvcMp7ajmsGMjl4lQ/s1600/church5.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So I guess, we go to a certain church because the place, the people have meaning to you. I wish for those who have not made it a habit to spend an hour with God every week to seek out that place of comfort where you want to worship, pray, give thanks and celebrate!<br />

YEY!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">I've kept mine simple and S.M.A.R.T., yep, I have been very happy with myself last 2010 as I have sort of achieved 2/3 of my resolutions. So here it goes ...</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>Be healthy, eat healthy</strong> ... no COKE unless I exercise, exercise every other day!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>Love self, develop self</strong> ... read fiction, continue to write... start writing that book on 'single living in mandaluyong', who knows I can publish it in the future!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>Save for a rainy day</strong> ... save enough (Pxxx) to travel to EUROPE or somewhere with Mr B! Renovate house ...!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>I just love the new year ... new beginnings, new hope</strong> ... and yes, my friend and I started to work on our new year's resolution last Sunday but it rained so we ate a hearty bfast first at Chocolate Kiss before hitting the sunken garden for some walking <em>(you know, one should start small and work up the ladder! walking, jogging then running)</em> but of course with our full gear. And this season is usually capped with a family luncheon or dinner at our house in Sacred Heart Village, Talisay City. When we were kids, I remembered we have Romeo, a hired "kusinero" who would come to the house and cook the whole night just to prep for lunch of 40 or so people! Our small house would have relatives coming from different places and all rooms will be bursting with cousins, aunts, uncles, friends. I even remembered my sister having a pet "kambing" cooked for this holiday feast. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">By tradition, the lunch party will also be our gift giving day and will be filled with games and special performances of the <strong>COUSINS Inc</strong>. When we were young, our parents want to show off our talents so we had to really perform. Ha ha ha! Oh I remembered how <em>Ranie </em>used to really sing for us and <em>Ate Shawi</em> showing off her dancing powers! The whole year, my sis and I would save money so we can have gifts for everyone. No cousin was left without a gift. Mom used to augment our gift giving budget just so we can give to everyone!</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">As the years passed, this tradition evolved. <em>Our small house was still the same</em> but we grew up. My sis and I had our own money, and my parents didn't have to augment our gift giving budget anymore. Our cousins too, grew up! But of course! And they have started to bring in their own gifts for everyone! What a truly wonderful day it was as we received gifts from each other. We stopped having Meo cook for the lunch party as we move on to having our lunch catered ... we didn't want to wash dishes and worry about the menu. So our reliable <span style="color:#990000;">Ma Lina Catering Service</span> was our best friend and lechon was delivered by Boy (dad's suki) every time!</span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">This year, we had our traditional lunch once again. This time, we had a record breaking ninety-plus attendees ... oh how our family have grown! Thanks so much to <strong><span style="color:#003300;">Ate Shawi</span></strong>, my partner in the games, to <strong><span style="color:#003300;">Jona</span></strong> who helped me with the big LAPUS clan and to<strong><span style="color:#990000;"> Brian,</span></strong> who organized and bought the gifts while I was away! <em>Oh mom, I'm sure you enjoyed it!</em></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Merry Christmas to all! My officemate introduced me to this place last September and we even brought our teams over for lunch. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">The place is sorta like a nice looking hawker place in Singapore. The food varies from your usual dimsum, Filipino <em>"sinigang"</em> and <em>"inhaw"</em>, also boasts of authentic tasting Singaporean, Indonesian, Thai and some Indian dishes. Of course, the place not only has Asian but it has its Western Counter as well that features pasta, fish & chips and steak. And note that food is cooked right there and then! So expect some waiting time. </span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">They also feature some original sounding bev like <em>Michael Jackson</em> (soy milk with black gulaman). Oh no, am not adventurous so I stick to my good 'ol Coke! So far, the ones I've tasted are great given the price of each dish (really value for money), try their<em> Laksah, Hainanese Chicken, Roti Prata and Spaghetti Vongole (Western Counter)</em> ... if you're adventurous and like it <strong>HOT</strong>, there's lots to choose from!</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Of course, I just go there for the food. On <em>Sundays</em>, the road around the garden is closed to vehicles, so there was a mass of runners, joggers, walkers, bikers, kids, granpa's, grandma's ... it was such a sight to see. I remembered way back in the early '90s that this was not the scene to see on a Sunday (being a dormer and all). But I guess, the fitness craze has hit everyone and even people like me who lives in Mandaluyong would drive all the way up here to walk, jog, talk and just plain relax. </span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">My recent visit to my doctor showed I gained weight, a weight I used to have only when I was a freshman at UP Diliman. With the mixture of being homesick, trying to fit in, having to study (kuno!), concocting schemes so I could get my crush to group study with me, etc .... <em>I could finish a pint of Selecta coffee crumble and a loaf of raisin bread from the Shopping center in one sitting!</em> It was only in freshman year that I hit the 110lbs scale, I'm always within my 100lbs weight zone. </span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">Walking around UP this morning, brought up so many memories and feelings. I guess my friend Bernard put it so aptly, <em>"you just can't get over UP"</em>. Yeah, when you're 16, all alone with all the freedom in the world, away from parental control and rules ... who can ever get over UP? The freedom is sometimes overwhelming that I've seen people who couldn't handle it and just spiral down ... sad yet, being in UP has taught me more than just the experential smoking, drinking, sneaking out of the dorm, helping a friend out while she double-booked herself for a date and make-out sessions. And its not some, <em>ISKOLAR ng bayan thing and maki-baka thing</em>, it's being <strong>responsible for your decisions and actions.</strong> Yup, and when it's not going as planned, there's no one to be blamed but YOU. </span></div><br /><div align="justify"><strong><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></strong></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">At a very young age, I knew that if I spent my allowance on a shopping spree or some <em>gimik</em>, I won't have money for laundry, <em>ikot</em> (walk yourself to death), group meetings and photocopy. I had to learn to budget! I lived in a dorm, with only my friends, my roommate and my BF knowing where I am. Physical safety and security was something I couldn't just assign to somebody else. Mind you, no mobile phones at that time. And getting sick was the worse part because you don't have a mom to take care of you. You have to walk to the pharmacy and buy your own meds. So, by the time you graduate, you can live practically anywhere!</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">On a lighter note, it was in UP that I gained long-time friends. Friends who know how terrible you look way back in the 90's (<em>my gosh, with very short shorts and frizzy hair</em>). Friends who have seen your high's and low's, friends who have become your second family. UP Dil was <em>my home away from home</em> ... so, how can you ever get over that?</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">So, I've decided to visit UP every weekend and jog, walk, run, relax ... eat breakfast at <strong>Rodic's</strong> and possibly visit the other restos there now. Maybe I'd bump into some of you. <em>See you there ...</em></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"><strong>Mrs Jane B.</strong></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

The heat was getting into me, so I asked my husband if we could cool down somewhere and check out any eating place at the Terraces.</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">Of course, for those of you who have not been to Ayala Center Cebu recently, the Terraces area was set up more than a year ago. It houses more restos and shops and has expanded the Ayala Center. In true Ayala Mall style, the place is themed and the design of the area is like the rice terraces, its tierred and there are water fountains and green landscaping. It has brought a new level of malling again for the Cebuanos!</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">Because I'm in Cebu, I wanted to go to a non-Manila place, and remembered <em><strong>The Dessert Factory</strong></em>! I do recall my friend (who has returned to Cebu a more than a year), telling me last time we went there that this sweets place is all-Cebuano, can't find it in Manila. So off we went at level 3 of the Ayala Terraces.</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">This place has the <em>carnival/circus/magical</em> feel inside. The waiters wear purple uniforms and funny hats. Their menu ranges from lots of cake types and pastries to the local <em>halo-halo</em>. But mind you I think only <em>halo-halo</em> is the Filipino dessert available. I'm not so into sweets so I ended up just having cold coffee latte just to cool down. But Brian has a sweet tooth and ordered their <strong>A-choco-lypse</strong>, their version "death by chocolate cake". And some savoury snack, <em>mini corn dogs</em>. In fairness, the cake was great, not so sweet and I thought the mini corn dog would probably be just 3 pcs, but lo and behold, 7 pcs all in all! My my, the light <em>merienda</em> has turned into a heavy one. We can't eat it all because we're saving space for the buffet dinner at the <em>Crossroads Mall's</em> <strong><em>Gourmet Cafe Kutsara at Tinidor</em></strong> (Dad's bday dinner treat). </span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Now, we had to walk it off! Of course, I'm not against the <em>"fall-in love with thy neighbor"</em>. Having an Ilonggo husband allows me to not just learn a new dialect in the Philippines but allows me to visit Iloilo in Panay on a regular basis.</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">My husband loves to cook, and loves eating more! And with it comes the fun of eating Ilonggo food. I learned to love eating <strong>Pantat Adobado</strong> <em>(visit Zaraga in Iloilo during Christmas and they have their Pantat "catfish" festival akin to the Bangus Festival in Dagupan)</em> and my new love, <strong>"kadyos"</strong>. Its the Ilonggo's version of <em>"sinigang</em>". It's this dish that contains black peas local to Panay. It can be with pork or <em>"bisaya"</em> chicken, with <em>"batuan"</em> for the sour taste and vegetable <em>"langka"</em> (jackfruit). I remebered my in-laws bringing us the raw <em><strong>"kadyos"</strong></em> peas in Manila just so my husband could cook for me the dish.</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">You really can't find the <strong><em>"kadyos"</em></strong> in the local fresh area of the supermarket, in fact I don't even think there's available ones in the local public market. Though, I was told, there are some, but not on a regular basis. Since its really hard to find here, once my <em><strong>"kadyos"</strong></em> craving strikes, I used to feel so helpless ... but wait we found a place that served this dish that's passable enough vs <em>Nang Oning's</em> cooking (my in-laws trusted help and cook back in Iloilo).</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">So, if you're wondering what it tastes like, visit <strong><span style="font-size:130%;color:#000000;">Ilonggo Grill</span></strong> in any of the popular foodcourts in malls. We know there's one in Galleria. An order would <em>cost P70+</em> good for two already or if you're so hungry should only be good for you. </span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">Try it, it will give you a different "sinigang'!</span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;color:#663366;"><strong>Mrs. Jane B.</strong></span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

I wanted to take them out to dine so they can experience Cebu food and local restos. I didn't get the chance to take them out though. I asked one them if they were able to eat at <strong>Casa Verde</strong> and she said, "YES". And when asked how was the food, she said, "ang sarap!".</span><br /></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Well, <strong><em>Casa Verde</em></strong> is one of the local must visit restos if ever you get to visit the Queen City of the South. Its original location is near <strong>Ranudo St., near Ramos area</strong>. My dad told me that their original resto used to be a ladies dorm back in the 70's. It has branches in <strong>THE WALK</strong> and at <strong>THE AYALA TERRACES</strong>. It's Cebu's version of T.G.I. Fridays ... but better with more value!</span><br /></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Their specialty are steak and ribs with prices ranging from Php 150-300! If eat like me, their serving size is good for two. My all time fave other than their <em><strong>Brian's Ribs</strong></em> is their cream potato soup. It's perfect for me, just the right <em>creaminess</em> and<em> thickness</em>. Though my sis thinks its too heavy. There's a lot in their menu to choose from so no worries ...</span><br /></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Just a bit of advise though, come in 30 min earlier during lunch and dinner rush hours to ensure you get a table, otherwise you will have to line up. So when you're in CEBU, don't forget to try <strong>Casa Verde</strong>.</span></div><div align="justify"> </div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Untill the next chow!</span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#330033;"><strong><em>Mrs Jane B.</em></strong></span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

The island boasts of its white beaches either up north going to Santa Fe in Bantayan or going south to Moalboal and nearby Badian Island. </span></div><span style="font-family:arial;"><div align="justify"><br />Being a native, coming home for the summer means food trekking as well.<br /></div><br /><div align="justify">Cebu started the <strong><em>“su-tu-kil” </em></strong>rave and everyone now knows what <strong>“sugba, tula, kilaw”</strong> means! If you still don’t then you must really visit Cebu and ask to be taken to the nearest SUTUKIL place. Anyways, my dad is a fan of these places and he and my mom used to frequent this place near SM City Cebu known as A1. He told me the <em>“tula”</em> is the greatest (fresh fish all the time) and they have various seafood <em>“sugba”</em> that are just charcoal hot! </div><br /><div align="justify">We recently visited with my dad and husband in tow (who needs to watch over his cholesterol) the said resto. Of course its <em>al fresco</em>! Meaning its carenderia style with no aircon and monobloc chairs and tables! The resto was packed with people all ordering seafood dishes ... the sugba and the tula lived up to expectation! And the best part is, it’s <strong>value for money</strong>! For the three of us ordering sugba fish, tula fish, seaweed salad, rice and drinks (minus dessert), all under P300.00 or USD6.40 ONLY! What a lunch and you still have extra money for dessert.</div><br /><div align="justify">I just love Cebu and the cheap local places where one can eat and enjoy! If you’re looking for this place, its outside the SM City Mall, walking distance from the CNT Lechon place, there’s parking and you won’t miss it because of the grill that’s outside the resto!</div><br /><div align="justify">Until the next chow!</div><br /><div align="justify"><br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#6600cc;">Mrs Jane B. </span></strong><br /></span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

When my mom got hospitalized because of her spine last Aug, our family's world have never been the same again. On top of regular household groceries and fresh food shopping, a mainstay in our list are now vitamins, medicine and medical supplies. With this I've taken a bit of fancy on checking out drugstores. </span><br /><br /></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">One of the biggest drugstore chain in the country is <strong><em>Mercury Drugstore</em></strong>. In Manila you can see one almost in every corner. In our area alone, we have 3 (which is a good 5-10min drive), one at Edsa Libertad, one at Boni cor Barangka and one at the Mandaluyong circle. I'm hoping they will open within our condo bldg, then it will really be just a walk away! </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">I was surprised though to read a reminder inside <strong>Mercury Drug's TV screens</strong> on the consumers right to the senior citizen discount. Which to those who don't know is actually 20% off. Of course, to avail of this discount one has to be over 60 yrs old and must have a senior citizen ID complete with prescription. But the fact that Mercury is reminding their shoppers, is indeed a pleasant surprise! This is truly a public service that must be duly noted! </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Our country does not have a good public health system but its good to note that private companies do take a lead on serving the general public by implementing health laws. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><em>Hmmm, I should be checking out the other major drugstores to see how they fare on the senior citizen discount law.</em> Will post results of my survey. This year I decided to come home and pay my homage to the miraculous Child Jesus, the patron of the Queen City of the South.<br /><br />When we were kids, my sis and I would look forward to <strong>Sinulog </strong>and the dancing festivities in the streets. My parents always brought us to watch the street dancing and allowed us to walk in the streets of Cebu without fear of any vehicles moving about. We used to always have a Sinulog shirt, feathered hat and markings on our face as we watch the street dancing competition.<br /><br />The <strong>SINULOG</strong> is the feast celebrated in honor of the <em>Child Jesus</em> or the <em><strong>Sto Nino de Cebu</strong></em>. It was said that the image of the <em>Child Jesus</em> was a gift from the Queen of Spain to the wife of then Cebu chieftain Raja Humabon back in the 1500’s. The modern festivities now include the <strong>Sto Nino’s</strong> image travelling to Mactan and be returned to Cebu City via a fluvial parade with boats registering to be part of it. This event also includes the historic image of <em><strong>Our Lady of Guadalupe</strong></em>, the patron saint of the whole province. After the early morning fluvial parade, an afternoon long city street procession happens as the images are paraded and brought back to the historic <strong>Basilica Minore del Sto Nino</strong>. And on the following day, which is usually the 3rd Sunday of January is the much awaited <strong>SINULOG Mardi Gras</strong>, the Cebuanos dance offering to the Sto Nino with steps that go two steps forward and one step back and saying, <em><strong>“Pit Senor” or “Viva Sto Nino”</strong></em>. The street dancing goes around the major thoroughfare usually in the uptown area of the city and ends at the Cebu City Sports Complex.<br /><br />This year I really wanted to be part of the procession once again and feel the beat and heat of the Sinulog dancers on the street. As usual with the protection of the <strong>Sto Nino</strong>, this year’s procession was peaceful and was estimated to have been participated by more than 1M devotees walking, praying and singing --- and most of them carrying their <strong>images of the Sto Nino</strong>. My sis, her husband Ronie and myself braved the throng of people and walked our way praying and carrying our <strong>Sto Nino image</strong> <em>(my estimate is that this Sto Nino is 30 yrs old)</em>. My mom would have walked with us but due to her illness, she couldn’t. So this procession was really for her so that she can be with us and pay homage to the Sto Nino. The procession started at 2pm and ended with a mass inside the Basilica at around 6pm.<br /><br />On Sunday, the street dancing started at 9am with the usual uptown area route. My parents always celebrated this day and so as tradition goes we had the usual luncheon salu-salo with my mom’s office staff. And it wouldn’t be complete without our famous<strong> Cebu lechon</strong>! <em><strong>Yumyum!</strong></em> The street dancing went on until early evening and my sis and I contented ourselves with watching near the Fuente Osmena area and stayed on the streets for an hour. The festive fever was still there, but now with more people! The participants with far more elaborate floats, props, costumes but the same old Sinulog beat and shouts of <strong>“Pit Senor”</strong>!<br /><br />Indeed as I write this while being stranded in the airport … after 10 years the SINULOG in Cebu hasn’t lost its beat but this year is extra special because …<em><strong><span style="color:#ffcc33;"> “</span><span style="color:#ffcc33;"><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Pit</span> Senor kang Mommy kini!”</span></strong></em><br /><br /><br /><em><strong><span style="color:#993399;">Mrs Jane B.</span></strong></em> </span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

My husband happens to love cooking and he is in demand in the Baluya family to prepare his famous "potato salad". </span><div><div><div><div><div><div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">So off we went to do our shopping. When I asked where we were going, everyone said <em>"sa Atrium"</em>. I didn't know where it was, so I just enjoyed the ride. I was surprised though when we parked at the provincial capitol where my mother-in-law works. When I asked why, they all said, parking is hard at the Atrium and besides its just across the street, we can walk. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">We entered the store and I noticed it had more than 20 or so check-out counters and its jampacked with shoppers. Only one entrance and one exit, its <em>not a dual entrance supermarket</em>. So shoppers are forced to follow the path the store has planned out. The personal care section is the first on the traffic flow. It's sad though that most of the skin and beauty products are enclosed in a counter with a sales clerk manning it. You can't touch and read the labels of the products. Pretty old fashion, when most of the stores are already self-service but I guess this is to manage pilferage since these are high-value.</span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">As I went around the store, I was surprise to discover it was pretty complete. The fresh produce had quite a variety of meat cuts and vegetables though the seafood section isn't that complete, could be because people here still visit the wet market and want their seafood pretty fresh. But they have in stock even fresh herbs. This store is NOT BAD at all! I've underestimated their assortment on food items. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:arial;">Staying there awhile made me realize why people go to this store despite the fact that the store aisles are small and shopping carts can bumped into each other, but the shoppers don't seem to care. Its pretty convenient, accessible with public transport. There is no big mall to deal with, less time spent walking. And its complete! Outside the supermarket is the local bakeshop "Tinapayan" that features a pastry christmas village display every year (a tradition). </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><strong><em>I guess the Ilonggos come here because, they feel right at home</em></strong>. You'll even hear shoppers meeting and greeting friends happy holidays. So shoppers really feel the familial bond inside the store. I can't complain, I'm just a visitor and these people shop here everytime. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span></div><br /><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><strong><em><span style="color:#993399;">Mrs Jane B.</span></em></strong> </span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--

But for me it reminds of my visits to my husband’s home. Been visiting Iloilo regularly for the past 10 years, either during summer or the Christmas holidays and there are just some <strong><span style="color:#ffff00;">“must have’s”</span></strong> everytime I visit. And here goes ...</span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><br /></div><div align="justify"><strong><span style="font-size:130%;"></span></strong></div><br /><br /><div align="justify"><strong><span style="font-size:130%;">Batchoy</span></strong>. My husband will never leave Iloilo without visiting the famous batchoy houses. Batchoy is a noodle soup dish that goes well with puto or pandesal. It’s different from your usual noodles as instead of pork, chicken or beef, it has “pork chicharon” – deep fried pork skin, and “laman loob” or various pork parts usually from the internal organs. The more famous houses in Iloilo are <strong>Ted’s Old Timer’s La Paz Batchoy</strong> and the newly re-launched <strong>Deco’s Original La Paz Batchoy</strong>. </div><br /><br /><div align="justify"><strong><span style="font-size:130%;">Kad-yos</span></strong>. My fave happens to be home-cooked by Nang Oning (my in-laws long time all-around companion). She makes the best kadyos dish either with local “bisaya” chicken or pork. If the Tagalog’s have “sinigang” the Ilonggos have “kadyos”. But what is it? It’s actually a legume that turns the dish reddish black. The dish can be sweet, sour, with coconut milk or without but in any case, one can only taste kadyos here in Iloilo! When we crave for kadyos in Manila, we usually visit the <em>Ilonggo Grill</em> and order one. </div><br /><br /><div align="justify"><span style="font-size:130%;"><strong>Seafood</strong>.</span> Due to its geography (lots of rivers) and location (seaside), Iloilo has one of the best seafood in the country. One only needs to drive along Villa and stop by the various restaurants to have a taste of Iloilo oyster or “talaba”. Most recently the locals have been visiting the Dumangas area as well for those fresh and yummy seafood. My in-laws fave happens to be <strong>Joyjoy’s</strong>. And if you visit in mid-December, you can visit Zarraga (a town outside Iloilo City right after Leganes) for its annual <strong><em>“pantat festival”</em></strong> (freshwater catfish) and get to taste catfish grilled, fried, BBQ or in soup dishes!</div><div align="justify"><br />These are my top 3 must have’s everytime I visit Iloilo and before I leave, I also have my top must have “pasalubongs”! That’ll be for my next write-up.<br /><br /><span style="color:#663366;"><strong><em>Mrs Jane B.</em></strong></span> </span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><script type="text/javascript"><!--
